What is the Open Archives Initiative?
The Open Archives Initiative (and its main product, the Protocol for Metadata Harvesting, or OAI-PMH) is primarily concerned with the interoperability and sustainability of metadata. The protocol has been adopted in a large sector of the scholarly publishing industry to enable "harvesters" to collect metadata from "repositories." To put it more clearly, the OAI-PMH provides a standard language for both data storage and retrieval from repositories. For a lot more information on OAI-PMH and its uses, please visit the
Open Archives Initiative Site.
Feeds are XML formats for "syndicating" content from different websites, like a news wire. How does it work? A Web site can allow other sites to share their content by creating an RSS document and updating it. A web publisher can post a link to the rss feed (like this) so users can read the distributed content on his/her site. Syndicated content can can include news feeds, listings of events, stories, headlines, etc. To subscribe to a feed, you can use:
among other options. More information about feeds can be found at the RSS Board site.
